My North Dakota Diary
Barnes County
'Barnes County was created by the territorial legislature of 1871, and was first named Burbank, in
honor of the then Governer. It was later changed to Barnes, in honor of Judge A.H. Barnes, of the
Federal district court. Its present organization dates from 1878. The agricultural settlement of the
county is very evenly distributed, no part is more than 12 miles from the railway. Valley City is the
county seat.' Source: North Dakota Blue Book -- 1942
